Water scarcity remains one of Bengaluru’s most pressing challenges, largely due to rapid urbanization and groundwater depletion. To address this critical issue sustainably, Yediyur Ward implemented an extensive rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge initiative by constructing rainwater sump pits across public spaces.

A total of 3,781 rainwater sump pits have been constructed across 17 parks and 197 roads within the ward. Each pit has a minimum capacity of 400 liters, with some capable of storing up to 12,000 liters of rainwater. During every rainfall, these sump pits collectively harvest approximately 8,68,000 liters of rainwater, allowing it to percolate into the ground and recharge the aquifers.

This large-scale implementation has earned Yediyur Ward the distinction of having the highest number of rainwater sump pits in the entire state of Karnataka. The impact of this initiative is clearly reflected in groundwater levels. While the average water table depth in Bengaluru stands at around 957 feet, Yediyur Ward records an average of just 230 feet—a remarkable improvement achieved through consistent, scientific rainwater management.

By integrating rainwater harvesting into everyday civic infrastructure, Yediyur Ward has demonstrated how simple, decentralized solutions can deliver long-term water security. This initiative stands as a benchmark for urban water conservation and sustainable governance in Bengaluru and beyond.
